Performance evaluation of BR3 characters by magazines in 2001

While sorting through my room, I came across a magazine from when BR3 was running in the arcades.
It is ARCADIA, a magazine dedicated to arcade video games.
In this magazine, articles on BR3 were serialised from the press release in December 2000 until June 2001.
The last article in that series evaluated the characters, with the exception of Kohryu & URANUS.
I therefore intend to reproduce it here.

The new year has come!
I'd like to upload casuals this year as well, but the harsh news came in.

As early as next week, Osaka will once again be on the alert for COVID-19, forcing the arcade to shorten its business hours.
This is a looser measure than lockdown, but unlike last year's high alert, it seems that this time there will be no government or municipal subsidies!

Originally, Japanese arcades are like walking a tightrope.
Most of the arcades that survive today aren't making a profit every month.
Small loans from banks are offset by store rents and electricity bills, forcing more customers to go out of business if they don't play more.

In such an environment, what happens if you are notified that "shorten business hours, no subsidies will be given"?
Arcades can't make the minimum amount of money, they can't pay rents, they can't get loans ... they have to go out of business.

In KO-HATSU, not only BR3 but also many retro games are running.
This environment is so precious that I don't want to lose it.
Please support KO-HATSU before it's too late.

log of the bulletin board 11 years ago

When I wrote my last post, I read back the bulletin board log.
It is a log of BR series of 2channel, which is the largest anonymous bulletin board in Japan.

The one that caught my eye was the post on 19/12/2009.
The poster claimed to be "I can't tell you the details, but I was involved in the development of the BR series."
Well, it's an anonymous bulletin board, so it's quite possible that it's a lie...
The contents of the log are as follows.

It can be said that it is hopeless that a remake or new work of the BR series will be released.
The relationship between Hudson and 8ing is close to insulation, and the relationship of rights is complicated.
In the first place, Mr.Fukuya has left Hudson.

First, the prerequisite for producing BR4 was "to produce up to BR5".

This is because the story of BR4 was insufficiently explained, and the Transform system, which was clearly unadjustable compared to past works up to BREX, was planned to be completed with BR5.

Around the same time, however, a Hudson Consumer executive resigned, taking responsibility for poor game sales.
With the resignation of the officer, many games under development that were determined to be non-profitable were terminated.
One of them is the BR series.
Mr.Fukuya, who was coordinating between Hudson and 8ing, was furious at this one-sided notice and left Hudson.

I believe that the BR series was established by Mr. Fukuya's strong personality.
So, if there is a sequel now, it's probably different from BR.
Mr.Fukuya has nothing to do with BR anymore.

Even now, Mr. Fukuya's whereabouts remain unknown since the release of BR4.
Also, it was confirmed that some staff members involved in BR3 to BR4 belonged to 8ing as they were, but probably most of the staff have already left 8ing.
Although I did not investigate it directly, the NARUTO series such as GNT are handled by the same staff as the BR series, but it seems that the development of TATSUNOKO vs CAPCOM & UMVC3 after that was done by a team different from the BR series.

Well, if this anonymous post is true, it turns out that KONAMI hasn't had any interest in the BR series since making Hudson a subsidiary.
Perhaps I wasn't interested in most Hudson-produced games, not just the BR series.
Even as of 2021, Bomberman is the only Hudson-produced game released by KONAMI.
So, if you criticize the BR series for lack of movement, it may be irrelevant to appeal to KONAMI who only owns the IP, and to appeal to Hudson, which became a subsidiary of KONAMI.

Fortunately, as was in the news a while back, 8ing still seems motivated to be involved in the development of fighting games.
So, if you want a sequel or remake of the BR series, maybe appealing to 8ing is your only hope.

About the difference of Evade

Originally, BR3 casuals was held on Dec.17th, but I couldn't hold it due to lack of participants, so I'd like to write a little column.
(as always, I'm sorry for the text left to Google Translate...)

The topic this time is "BR3's Evade has a performance difference of 1Por2P".

Evade specifications

First of all, about the specifications of Evade.

-Reception is between 9Frames.

For example, when evading an attack with a startup of 20frames, if you input Evade according to the 12~20frames of the opponent's attack, Evade will succeed.

-Evade will not succeed if the other party has not started the attack operation.

Evade has a specification that "If you do not input after the opponent starts the attack action, it will definitely fail".

For example, P of Bakuryu is the startup is 8Frame.
When Evade P of Bakuryu, it is necessary to input Evade after Bakuryu starts the attack, so you have to narrow down the input between 7Frames of 2~8 frames.

Here is the specification of Evade wrote before, but in BR3 of the PS2ver, specifications 1P/2P has been found to be different.

The player who selects the mode suffers a disadvantage

Specification difference between the 1P/2P is determined at the time of selecting the mode, such as Arcade and VS mode.
The difference in specifications is as follows.

chosedidn't choose
reception time 9F 10F
simultaneous restrictions restricted not restricted

Let's assume that 1P decides the training mode.
At this time, the 1P Evade has the specifications described earlier.
However, 2P Evade will change so that the reception will be extended by 1Frame and it will succeed even if you enter it at the same time as the opponent's attack.
This handicap is attached in all modes, not just training mode.

This slight difference is rarely noticed while playing the game.
One example that has a clear impact is Long 236236B in Hyper.
This attack is a Mid-Low double attack, and the startup is set to 1F for the second Low attack.
After HG of the first Mid attack, Evade cannot be successful unless Evade is input at the same time as the subsequent Low attack.
Here, the above-mentioned difference becomes apparent.
The player who decides the mode cannot Evade the second Low attack.
However, players who do not decide the mode can Evade the Low attack.
This is the "simultaneous restrictions".
